THE inner workings of the Church of Scientology may face a public examination after the independent senator Nick Xenophon used parliamentary privilege to level a series of accusations against the controversial religion.
Yesterday the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, described the senator's allegations as ''grave'' and said many Australians had real concerns about Scientology.
''I share some of those concerns,'' Mr Rudd said. He added, however, that he wanted to examine letters tabled by Senator Xenophon before agreeing to an inquiry into the religion.
''Let us proceed carefully, and look carefully at the material which he has provided, before we make a decision on further parliamentary action,'' he said.
