A new generation of cleverly designed cookware is helping urbanites with little time on their hands get back in the kitchen. Potato-peeler rubber gloves, microwaveable cake pans and other novelty gadgets are bringing about dramatic changes in cooking habits.

Microwavable cake pans?! For making microwaved cakes????? How is that progress?

A good set of well-maintained knives will replace the need for any kitchen gadget. And let's be realistic: anybody who is willing to nuke a cake isn't interested in cooking to begin with, so is probably not the best person around whom to remake the industry.

Microwaved cake. The thought makes my stomach turn. Blech.

Amen. Piper. Microwaved cake, probably from a box, too. Perish the thought! Yuck!

Surely you would like the potato peeling glovers?

    A microwave-specific mix. Yuck.

Surely you would like the potato peeling glovers?

They'd be just one more thing to take up space in my drawers. They are bulkier than a potato peeler and can be applied to fewer purposes than a paring knife.

They would qualify as "gadgets" and I really don't like "gadgets" in my kitchen. I tend to go with the tried and true. It is like when people stopped using cast iron and went with the newfangled no stick pots and pans. Guess what? Cast iron is back with a vengeance. Those gloves will never stand the test of time, nor can we anticipate that their lifespan will rival that of a good set of knives.

I think the problem is people look at peeling as a drudgery whereas I look at it as just one thing to accomplish en route to my final goal, i.e. the meal. Peeling potatoes comes with the territory. I'll pick my knives up from their annual professional sharpening tomorrow and then get started on the Christmas feast (which will include mashed potatoes). No gloves required.
