THE parents of some of Australia's most severely disabled children have rushed to the defence of a Queensland couple who went to court to get permission to sterilise their 11-year-old daughter.

Supporters of the couple say the strain of puberty on girls is often too much for a disabled child to bear.

Yesterday The Australian reported the case of the girl, known in court documents as Angela, who has the incurable neurological disorder Rett syndrome. Although about to turn 12, she responds in the manner of a three-month-old baby.

This is one of those things (and there are quite a few that fall into this category) of things that should be permissible, but challenging to obtain...if that makes sense.

Make the parents prove they are acting in the child's best interest and then allow it when they do.

That seems a sensible approach to me and appears to be what the Australian court has done
