MORE than 20 years after it appeared, a classic Mambo design has proved too controversial to sell in a department store.

Big W has removed 200 T-shirts depicting the crucifixion of a mouse from 30 stores following a complaint. Australian artist Richard Allen created the design in 1986.

The move comes just weeks after the department store added Mambo to its clothing range. The T-shirt bears the caption: ''Forgive them, father, they know not what to wear.''
