Gripped by financial crisis and beset by strikes, Italy is not at present the cheeriest of nations - and as the first shows of the year begin Milan's fashion barons are torn between how to face up to glum reality.
At Dolce & Gabbana they chose nostalgia. "The situation in the world is not so good," said Stefano Gabbana before yesterday's menswear show. "So what we can do as designers is give people something to dream of."
