  • The Dutch government is looking at new ways to cut the country's budget deficit. It's hoping to tap in to an industry that generates billions of euros a year by bringing in a new plan to make prostitutes pay taxes like everyone else.

Officials have traditionally treated prostitutes with a little more leniency on taxation than other workers, seeing them as victims of pimps and people traffickers.

  • A chief superintendent at West Yorkshire Police has called for a DNA database of men who use prostitutes.

Ch Supt Alison Rose, who works in Bradford South, said if DNA was taken men might "think again" about committing crimes against women.

The police force was involved in investigations into Peter Sutcliffe and Stephen Griffiths.

But Guy Herbert from the No2ID campaign said DNA samples could lead to false accusations.

  • Prostitutes working on the street outside a town northern Spain have been ordered to wear reflective vests to make them visible to passing traffic and reduce the risk of accidents.

  • SEX product companies are being asked to supply the State Government with coloured, flavoured, ribbed and studded condoms for handing out to prostitutes.

NSW Health asked suppliers to quote prices for novelty condoms in its latest tender to keep up with the sex industry's preferred tools of the trade.

NSW Health said that the condoms would be handed out to prostitutes and their clients to encourage their use and prevent the spread of sexual diseases.

  • There is still a high demand for prostitutes in Malaysia — if official figures on the arrests of foreign call girls are any indication.

And one of the reasons for this steady demand is apparently busy, career-chasing wives.

Women's Aid Organisation vice-president Vicky Alahakone said in some cases, the wives were partly to blame for their men straying as they had unwittingly "abandoned" their husbands while trying to juggle careers and the household.

"Some husbands seek prostitutes to escape the dreariness of their daily lives by injecting some excitement into their mundane routines.

"It's like going out for dinner and having an exotic meal. Then, feeling full and satiated, they go home to the wife and kids.
